Someone recently asked me what does “Do this in remembrance of me” mean? I realized it’s not immediately obvious to the casual observer, especially someone who hasn’t been to church much. Or one who went to a certain kind of church.
Communion is a service, or sacrament in the church where bread and wine are taken by each member to commemorate Christ’s death. Jesus himself began the tradition in the Upper Room with his disciples.
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
