What Does Jesus Looks Like?

Revelation chapter 1 is unique because it's the only place in the New Testament we find a physical description of Jesus. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:16 that though we knew Him as He was (when He was in the flesh), we no longer think of Him that way. We now think of Jesus as He is -- the glorified King of Kings. And that's exactly what we find in this vivid description. Lets go verse by verse from Revelation 1 verses 12 to 16 and take a deeper look.

"I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a Son of Man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest." (Rev. 1:12-13)

The seven lampstands are the complete Church. And in the mist of the Church we find Jesus Christ (Matthew 18:20). What a comforting thought to see Jesus right there along side us! He is here to love and minister to us. He never leaves us and never forsakes us (Hebrews 13:5).

He wears long robe with a golden sash -- the cloths of a high priest. He is know as the "Son of Man" which comes from Daniel 7:13-14 and speaks of Him as being fully God and fully Man. As both, Jesus is worthy to act as Man's representative to God thus making Him our great High Priest (Hebrews 4 & 5). We can have peace because He is perfect and holy and mediates and intercedes on our behalf.

"His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire." (Rev. 1:14)

His hair is white, which represents His eternal nature (John 1), as well as His wisdom. His eyes blaze like fire because "nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account." (Hebrews 4:13)

"His feet were like brass glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters." (Rev 1:15)

His feet of brass show us that He has endured the fires of judgment. Israel's alter of sacrifice were made of brass (Exodus 27:1-6). This was because God wanted to show that one day Jesus, the Perfect Sacrifice would come.

Imagine hearing His voice! When Jesus speaks it's like the sound of waves crashing -- powerful and full of authority.

"In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance." (Rev. 1:16)

In Revelation 1:20 Jesus says that the seven stars are the angels of the churches. In the Greek "angels" translates to "messengers". So here we find Jesus holding His messengers -- those who tell others about how much He loves us -- in His right hand, strengthening and encouraging.

Out of His mouth comes a double edge sword. This is His Word (Hebrews 4:12) which He uses to judge those who reject Him.

Oh, how we long to see the face of Jesus! Revelation 19:11 says that Jesus has a name which know one knows but Himself. What does that mean? Well, I have to admit that I had a hard time writing this study. I couldn't figure out why until jI went over this verse. I am trying to describe Jesus! I've used words such as "perfect", "brilliant", and "powerful". But these words don't do Him justice. Trying to describe Jesus is like trying to describe a sunset or how you felt when you saw you child born. You can get a general idea, but you just can't think of the exact words. That's because only Jesus knows the words to describe that which is indescribable. What joy it will be when He shares those words with us.
