Donald Grey Barnhouse, a famous bible teacher from the 1950′’s, lost his wife to cancer when she was in her thirties. On the way to the funeral his oldest daughter asked him, “If Jesus died for our sins why do we still die?”

At that moment a large truck roared past them. Barnhouse turned to his daughter and asked, “Tell me, sweetheart, would you rather be run over by that truck or its shadow?”

“By the shadow,” she replied, “it can’t hurt you.”

Barnhouse nodded and said, “Did you know that the truck of death ran over the Lord Jesus in order that only its shadow might run over us? Your mother has not been overrun by death, but by the shadow of death. That is nothing to fear.”

“I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus told us, “He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” (John 11:24) Christians hold fast to this promise.

That’s why everyone who call Christ their Savior, can say, “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 15:55-57)

“Rise, let us be going…” – Matthew 26:46

The disciples went to sleep when they should have kept awake, and when they realized what they had done it produced despair in them.

When we feel something is beyond repair it can cause us to despair, and we say, “It’s all over now, there’s no use trying any more.” If we think that this kind of despair is rare, we’re mistaken, it’s a very common human experience.

Whenever we realize that we’ve missed out on a magnificent opportunity Jesus Christ comes and says, “That opportunity is lost forever, you cannot alter it, but arise and go to the next thing.” Let the past sleep, but let it sleep on the bosom of Christ, and go out into the future with Him.

There are experiences like this in each of our lives. We find ourselves in despair and we cannot lift ourselves out of it. The disciples in this instance had done a downright unforgivable thing — they had gone to sleep instead of watching with Jesus, but He said to them “Arise and do the next thing.”

If we’re Christians, what is the next thing? It’s to trust Him absolutely and to pray on the ground of His Redemption. Never let the sense of failure keep you from moving forward with Christ.

In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” Matthew 7:12

In the verse above, Jesus lays down a general principle for dealing with people. We’re not to treat people the way they treat us, we’re to treat people the way we would like them to treat us. This is how the Christian is to live.

This is a golden rule indeed! It doesn’t simply forbid petty malice, revenge, cheating and deceit. It does much more. It prevents the need to lay down endless little rules for our conduct in specific cases. It sweeps away the whole debatable ground with one mighty principle. It shows us a balance and measure, by which everyone may see at once how they should act.

Is there something we wouldn’t like our neighbor to do to us? Then let us always remember that this is the thing we ought not to do to him. Is there a thing we would like our neighbor to do to us? Then this is the very thing we ought to do to him.

Mention any sin you like, and I will assure you that people have committed the same sins and have been saved.

Think of David, who’s committed adultery and murder… that didn’t stop God’s love from flowing to him.

Or think of the case of Manasseh; he shed innocent blood very much; he bowed before idols; he put his own child to death as a sacrifice to the false god, and yet God’s love laid hold upon him, and Manasseh became a bright star in heaven, though once as vile as the lost in hell.

And again…Paul says he was the chief of sinners, and he meant it; he spoke by inspiration, and there is no doubt he was.

Now if the greatest of sinners has passed through the strait gate, there must be room for the next greatest; if the greatest sinner in the world has been saved, then there is a possibility for you and for me, because we cannot be worse sinners than the very chief of sinners.

God doesn’t refuse to love us because there is sin in us. If there is anything in you, then, that makes you think God cannot love you, I reply, “Impossible!” for surely your sins do not exceed those of the chief of sinners.

But I will dare to say that even if we were, even if we could exceed Paul, even that could be no barrier; for man’s sin is the act of a finite creature, but God’s grace is the act of infinite goodness.

God forbid that I should downplay your sin. They are loathsome, they are hellish in themselves. But the grace, the love, and the pity of God, oh! these are infinite, eternal, everlasting, boundless, matchless, unconquerable, and therefore the grace of God can overcome and prove itself mightier than your guilt and sin.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

…go and sin no more. (John 8:11)

“Be confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)

Take comfort in the thought that the Lord Jesus does not cast off those who believe in him because of their failures and imperfections.

He knows what they are. He takes them, as the husband takes the wife, with all their blemishes and defects, and once joined to Him by faith, will never leave them. He is a merciful and compassionate High Priest.

He knew what they were before conversion – wicked, guilty, and defiled; yet He loved them. He knows what they will be after conversion – weak, erring, and frail; yet He loves them.

He has promised to save them, despite all their shortcomings, and what He has promised He will perform.

“The Lord is near the broken-hearted.” – Psalm 34:18

The world cares very little for broken hearts, but the God of the Bible is the God of the broken-hearted.

People often break the heart’s of other by their cruelty, their falseness, their injustice and their coldness. But God cares. Broken-heartedness draws Him down from heaven.

Doctors don’t treat the healthy but the sick. It’s the same with God. It’s not to the whole and the well, but to the broken and the wounded, that He comes with sweetest tenderness. Jesus said of His mission: “He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted.” (Isaiah 61:1)

God repairs and restores the hurt and ruined life. He takes the bruised reed and, by His gentle skill, makes it whole again until it grows into fairest beauty.

The love, pity, and grace of God ministers sweet blessings of comfort and healing to restore the broken and wounded hearts of His people. The God of the Bible is the God of those brought low, whom He lifts up into His strength.

God is the God of those who fail — not that He loves those who stumble and fall better than those who walk without stumbling — but He helps them more. The weak believers get more of His grace than those who are strong believers.

There is a special divine promise which says, “My power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor 12:9) When we are aware of our own insufficiency, then we are ready to receive His divine sufficiency. And so our very weakness is an element of strength. Our weakness is an empty cup which God fills with His own strength.

You may think that your weakness disqualifies you for noble, strong, beautiful living, or for sweet, gentle, helpful serving. But really it’s something which, if you give it to Christ, He can transform into a blessing, a source of His power.

The Bible says my King is a seven way King. He’s the King of the Jews – that’s a racial King; He’s the King of Israel – that’s a national King; He’s the King of Righteousness, He’s the King of the ages, He’s the King of Heaven, He’s the King of Glory, He’s the King of Kings and He’s the Lord of Lords!

He’s my King, I wonder – do you know Him?

David said the Heaven’s declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. My King is a sovereign King. No means of measure can define His limitless love, no far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shore-less supply, no barrier can hinder Him from pouring out His blessings

He’s enduringly strong, He’s entirely sincere, He’s eternally steadfast, He’s immortally graceful, He’s imperially powerful, He’s impartially merciful.

Do you know Him?

He’s the greatest phenomenon that has ever crossed the horizon of this world! He’s God’s son, He’s the sinners Savior, He’s the centerpiece of civilization, He stands in the solitude of Himself, He’s august and He’s unique! He’s unparalleled, He’s unprecedented, He’s the loftiest idea in literature, He’s the highest personality in philosophy,

He’s the supreme problem in higher criticism, He’s the fundamental doctrine of true theology, He’s the miracle of the age, He is – yes He is, He is the superlative of everything good that you choose to call Him, He’s the only one who qualified to be an all sufficient Savior;

Do you know Him?

He supplies strength for the weak, He’s available for the tempted and the tried, He sympathizes and He saves, He strengthens and sustains, He guards and He guides, He heals the sick, He cleansed the lepers, He forgives sinners, He discharges debtors, He delivers the captives, He defends the feeble, He blesses the young, He serves the unfortunate, He regards the aged, He rewards the diligent and He beautifies the meek.

Do you know Him?

My King is the key to knowledge: The wellspring of wisdom; the doorway of deliverance; the pathway of peace; the roadway of righteousness; the highway of holiness, and the gateway of glory!

His office is manifold: His promise is sure. His light is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His reign is Righteous. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.

I wish I could describe Him for you, but He’s indescribable! He’s Incomprehensible! He’s invincible! He’s Irresistible!

You can’t get Him out of your mind or off your hands! You can’t out-live Him and you can’t live without Him! The Pharisees couldn’t stand Him, but they found out they couldn’t stop Him. Pilate couldn’t find any fault in Him. The witnesses couldn’t agree. Herod couldn’t kill Him. Death couldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him!

That’s my King, That’s my King, That’s my King, and He’s the kingdom and the power and the glory – Forever! AMEN!!!

“Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us.” Psalm 90:17

Humanity was made to be beautiful. God’s ideal for man was spotless loveliness — man was made in God’s image. But sin has tarnished this image. We see the result of sin wherever we go.

All of Christ’s work of grace is geared towards restoring the beauty of the Lord in His people. In our Christian lives His great work is the fashioning of holiness in us.

We’re commanded to follow in the footsteps of our Lord. Jesus Himself was “altogether lovely” (Song 5:16) and so His followers are to live in a “manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Phil 1:27)

We’re commanded to put away all that is sinful, marring, every blot and blemish, every unholy desire, feeling and affection, everything that would defile, and put on whatever is lovely and Christ-like.

The things which are noble, just, pure, lovely, and good are the things we’re to focus on so we may live a beautiful, redeemed life. (Phil 4:7-9)

The goal is to be transformed into the likeness of Christ which, we’re promised in 1 John 3:2-3, we shall attain:

“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”

Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” – John 13:5-7

At this time Peter didn’t know why the Savior he really needed was a Savior with basin and towel. He was thinking of a Savior with throne and crown. He didn’t understand it until after the blood of Calvary had been shed. Christ referred to these days as “afterwards.”

This saying of Christ, however, may be used in a much wider sense. There are a great many things that He does, which at the time we cannot understand, but in due time all of them will become clear. As they appear to us, while we are passing through them, they’re unfinished acts but when the work is completed it will appear beautiful.

One time Jacob thought, “Everything is against me!” (Gen 42:36) But he lived to see that the very things which he thought were against him were really all working together for his good. In God’s providence “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.” (Rom 8:28)

The back of a needlepoint appears to be a mystery of tangle and confusion but there is a beautiful picture on the other side. In the same way we’re looking at our lives on the back side. We cannot see the Master’s plan until ‘afterwards’.

Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

Eastern kings were secluded, and surrounded themselves with impassable barriers. It was very difficult for even their most loyal subjects to approach them.

You remember Esther, who, though the monarch was her husband, took her life in her hand when she presented herself before the king Ahasuerus, because there was a commandment that none should come to the king unless they were called, at peril of their lives.

This isn’t the case with Christ, the King of kings. His court is far more splendid; his person is far more worshipful; but you may draw near to him at all times without fear or hindrance.

He has set no guard around his palace gate. The door of his house of mercy is set wide open, and above it is written, “Everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matt 7:8)
